On this last Monday of the month of January, we go to the Emirates in Dubai to catch an interview with the duo Khawla and Radha. This is for all my muslims and non muslim readers here:
*Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background? What are your general professional and non-professional interests?
I, Khawla am a forth year student at Zayed University, majoring in Communication and Media Sciences and specializing in Integrated Strategic Communication and I, Roadha am a second year student at Zayed University majoring in Arts and Sciences and specializing in Fine arts and graphic design. Fashion started as a hobby and we both knew that we wanted to design since early age.
We were brought up in a house full of fashion. Our mother would take us to her boutique, Farfalla Haute Couture, and we’d start playing at creating our own gowns. Little by little, we both got ourselves into designing With the support of our mother we managed to learn and experiment and now have launched our third collection.
*What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a big part of our lives. We express ourselves with the designs and the collection we launch.
*How would you define your city’s fashion?
We think the city has definitely changed these last years. Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and we think that by itself makes it interesting, the Different cultures, Tourism and allot more .In our opinion people are more comfortable with what they wear and are more outgoing. A woman nowadays can express her self more with her style, which we believe is great. We have a lot of talented designers, the fashion manages to blend the best of the Western and the eastern designs.
*When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
For several years we have been making our own clothes as a hobby. Family, friends and people started asking us where we got our clothes from and after serious consideration and determination to pursue fashion, we decided to take our passion forward and launch the new prêt a porter line to serve modern fashion-conscious women.
*What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer? what do u enjoy most about designing clothes?
The entire process, research, the inspiration, drawing and then seeing the result is priceless.
what makes our designs different is that we put our personalities and adding our personal touch into each collection we create. For the winter collection we used Roadha’s artwork as the center of the collection. Roadha is usually inspired by movement and has produced several artworks that reflect her personality and creativity. We always try to think outside the box and create something new for our clients.
*What kind of feedback did you get on your first collection?
we launched the Dolls Collection in February 2013. It was inspired by Art Deco dolls, which were set from the 1920’s and 1930’s.
We wanted the collection to represent different personalities, which is why every doll is different and unique in each dress. We got very good feedback from the clients and that is what kept us going. We also had a lot of support from family and friends.
*Among your collections what is your most and least favorite ones? Your most sought out by buyers?
We don’t have a least favorite design, we like everything we create and we don’t launch a product unless we are very happy with the result.
*Do you have a specific research process when you start a new collection?
We get inspired from different places, we love to travel allot and that always nourishes our creativity. Our mother inspires us a lot as well as magazines, movies, trends and the Internet of course.
*Who inspires you the most in fashion? Anyone who stands out?
Our Favorite designers are Jeremy Scott, Givenchy and Celine Every designer has their own style and that is what makes them special and different.
*Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
We are currently stocking in five boutiques in Dubai and our aim is to showcase in more boutiques across the UAE. We are also aiming to explore the GCC region and hopefully internationally.
In the near future we will definitely take part in international fashion show. We are slowly expanding our brand and working hard to expand and showcase our designs all over the world.
*Any closing conclusions/advice to give our readers or future designers
We would tell the upcoming fashion designers that it takes a lot of hard work and commitment if you want to keep your line going, also that there is a lot of competition. It is a life commitment and to be successful you constantly have to be open to inspirations in everything. Designers are getting younger and younger these days which is amazing, they just need to show they are great at business as well, which ultimately, comes with experience.
